NEWS FLASH!!!---
Circle 3143 awarded 3rd place honors. At the annual Squires of California State Convention we were honored as one of the three best Circles in California. We also placed 4th in the Spirital Division; 5th in the Social and Athletic Divisions and 9th in Membership. Considering there are 37 Circles competing we did dang good.
We are proud to say that three of our Squires are leaving to become Knights of Columbus in Msgr. Raymond Renwald Council #7241 here at St. Joseph Church in Elk Grove.

ABOUT THE SQUIRES
The Columbian Squires are the official youth program of the Knights of Columbus and will celebrate their 75th anniversary in the year 2000.
HISTORY
In the early 1900s the Order decided to organize and sponsor its own youth program, known as Columbian Squires. This organization of Catholic young men is sponsored only by Knights of Columbus Councils or Assemblies and has as its purpose the training of its members in the art and techniques of leadership. It is literally the junior organization of the Knights. The program is highly structured and operates internationally. Opportunity to accept positions of leadership and responsibility is the major attraction to membership in the Squires program.
The Columbian Squires program was developed to enhance a young man's opportunities in life - a chance to receive the leadership training and moral guidance needed to succeed. With so many types of organizations for young men today, what makes the squires different? This is a Catholic organization that builds character and develops leadership.
BEING A SQUIRE
While you are a squire, you will have a chance to participate in many different kinds of activities. Programming includes four standing committees - spiritual activities, service activities, circle activities and membership activities. The goal of each committee is to organize and complete at least four different activities a year. This provides the opportunity for growth in areas such as decision-making, delegation of responsibility, administration, public speaking, public relations, record-keeping, financial responsibility, and program promotion. You won't merely be a participant in those activities. You will plan them, organize them, finance them, promote them, and carry them to completion. Your counselors will guide, advise, and assist you in learning the skills needed to complete your programs - but yours is the responsibility for how well these programs are carried out.
During the past few years Columbian Squires have shown great interest in participating in projects that "bind" them together for one common purpose. Since 1975 the Squires"'Crusade against Poverty" and "Project Build" raised some $50,000 through the efforts and sacrifices of circles and individuals. The Squires initiated an alcohol awareness campaign, "Dying for a Drink?" The campaign received the Distinguished Service Award from the National Commission Against Drunk Driving in 1987. More recently, the Squires assisted the Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus by donating over $26,000 to help pay for the construction of an elevator at St. Mary's Church in New Haven, Conn., the birthplace of our Order.
